Peter Bay, conductor
This program explores transformation, variation, and imagination across three distinct works. Brahms’ Variations on a Theme of Handel, presented in Rubbra’s orchestration, reveals a meticulous unfolding of musical ideas, balancing structure with expressive depth. Pianist Yifei Xu brings clarity and precision to Liszt’s Piano Concerto in A Major, a work that moves fluidly between lyricism and virtuosity. The program concludes with Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, a vivid sequence of musical scenes inspired by visual art, brought to life through shifting colors and character. Together, these works invite the listener to move through a series of evolving sound worlds, each shaped by transformation and perspective.
